How We Measured Words per Page

Most words-to-pages charts repeat the same two numbers. We measured instead. We typeset about 4,000 words of essay prose (paragraphs of 120 words with a half-inch first-line indent) in fonts that have exactly the same letter widths as the Word fonts: Liberation Serif for Times New Roman, Liberation Sans for Arial, Carlito for Calibri, Caladea for Cambria and Liberation Mono for Courier New. The text area was 6.5 by 9 inches (a US Letter page with 1-inch margins), with each font's own single line height as Word uses it.

A page packed with 12 pt Times New Roman held 625 words single-spaced and 313 double-spaced. Real documents lose space to a title, headings and the short last line of each paragraph, so every figure on this site is the packed page less 20%. For Times New Roman that gives the familiar 500 and 250 words per page; for 11 pt Calibri, Word's old default, it gives 560 and 280.

What Changes the Number of Words per Page

  • Font: wider fonts such as Arial or Courier New fit fewer words per line than Times New Roman.
  • Font size: 11 pt fits more words than 12 pt; 14 pt fits noticeably fewer.
  • Margins: wider margins leave less room for text on each page.
  • Spacing: line spacing and the space Word adds before or after paragraphs both add length.
  • Layout: headings, lists, block quotes, tables, and short lines of dialogue leave white space on the page.

Word's default style is not 12 pt Times New Roman, so set the font and spacing your instructions require before you compare page counts.
