How to Check Word Count in Google Docs (Desktop, Web & Mobile)

Whether you are writing an essay, draft manuscript, freelance article, or academic paper, tracking your word count in Google Docs is simple once you know the hidden toggles and shortcuts. Here is everything you need to master Google Docs word counts.

Quick Shortcuts & Actions Cheatsheet

Windows & ChromeOS
Ctrl+Shift+C
Mac (macOS)
⌘ Cmd+Shift+C
Sticky Live CounterTools > Word count > ☑ Display while typing
iOS & Android AppTap "..." (Top Right) > Word count

1. The Quickest Method: Google Docs Keyboard Shortcut

The fastest way to check word count without touching your mouse is with the official hotkey:

Windows, ChromeOS & Linux:
Ctrl+Shift+C
Mac (macOS Chrome & Safari):
⌘ Cmd+Shift+C

What Information Appears in the Pop-Up Box:

  • Pages: Total physical pages (in standard Paginated print view).
  • Words: Total word tokens in the body of the document.
  • Characters: Total character count including spaces, tabs, and line breaks.
  • Characters excluding spaces: Pure letter, digit, and punctuation count (vital for academic character limits and translation rates).
Shortcut Conflict in Google Chrome? If pressing Ctrl+Shift+C opens Chrome Developer Tools (Inspect Elements) instead of Google Docs word count, your browser focus is currently outside the document editor canvas. Click once anywhere inside the document text and press the shortcut again.

2. How to Display Word Count on Screen While Typing

By default, Google Docs does not show the word count permanently on screen. However, you can enable a persistent, floating pill in the bottom-left corner that updates in real time with every keystroke:

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Click on Tools in the top menu bar (or press Ctrl+Shift+C / ⌘+Shift+C).
  2. Click Word count in the dropdown menu.
  3. At the bottom of the pop-up modal, check the box labeled:
☑ Display word count while typing
  4. Click OK.

Switching the metric: Click the small downward arrow (▼) on the floating pill in the bottom-left corner to toggle between displaying Words, Pages, Characters, or Characters without spaces.

Hiding the counter: Click the arrow on the pill and select Hide word count to dismiss it whenever you want distraction-free writing.

3. How to Check Word Count for Selected or Highlighted Text

If you only need to count a single section, paragraph, or abstract, Google Docs calculates selection counts automatically:

With Live Counter Pill On

Simply highlight any text passage with your mouse. The bottom-left pill automatically changes from total words to:

145 / 2,120 words

The first number represents selected words; the second is the total document count.

With the Shortcut Modal

Highlight your text and press Ctrl+Shift+C (or ⌘+Shift+C).

The modal displays two side-by-side columns: Selection vs. Total across all metrics.

4. How to Check Word Count in Google Docs Mobile (iPhone, iPad & Android)

The Google Docs mobile app does not show word counts on the editing canvas, nor does it support a live typing pill. Here is how to inspect your statistics on smartphones and tablets:

iPhone & iPad (iOS)

  1. Open your document in the Google Docs app.
  2. Tap the More options icon (three horizontal dots "...") in the top-right corner.
  3. Tap Word count.
  4. A sheet displays Words, Characters, and Characters excluding spaces.
  5. To count highlighted text on iOS: Select the text passage first, then tap the three dots > Word count.

Android Phones & Tablets

  1. Open the document in the Docs app.
  2. Tap the three vertical dots in the upper right.
  3. Select Word count from the list.
  4. Inspect your counts.
  5. To count a selection on Android: Long-press and drag handles to highlight the text, then tap the three dots > Word count.

5. Word Count in Google Docs "Pageless" Mode

Google Docs provides two layout modes: Pages (standard print layout with margins and page breaks) and Pageless (continuous web canvas).

Why does Pageless mode show an em dash (—) for Pages?

Because Pageless documents do not have physical page breaks or headers, Google Docs cannot compute an exact page count. Word and character counts remain 100% accurate.

To see your exact page count, temporarily switch back to Pages mode: Click File > Page setup > Pages > OK.

6. Google Docs vs. Microsoft Word: Crucial Differences

If you copy text from Google Docs into Microsoft Word, you will frequently notice slight differences in total word count. Here is why:

Element / FeatureGoogle DocsMicrosoft WordPractical Impact
Footnotes & EndnotesStrictly ExcludedOptional CheckboxIn Google Docs, you cannot include footnotes in the total count automatically. In Word, you can toggle them on or off.
Text Inside Drawings / ShapesIgnored (0 words)Included in countDiagram text created via Insert > Drawing is invisible to the Google Docs counter.
Em Dashes Without Spaces (—)Can combine tokensStrictly 2 wordsWord always treats em dashes as word separators; Google Docs sometimes merges them depending on punctuation encoding.
Hyphenated Words (e.g. self-esteem)1 Word1 WordBoth processors treat standard hyphenated compounds as a single word token.
Academic & Legal Word Limit Warning:If you are writing a thesis (Chicago / Turabian style) or a court brief requiring footnote counts, Google Docs will under-report your true word count because it ignores footnotes. Paste your text into the Word Word Count tool above or check it in Microsoft Word with the footnote checkbox enabled.

7. Troubleshooting Common Google Docs Word Count Problems

Issue 1: The Word Count Option Is Greyed Out

If the Tools > Word count menu item is disabled, your document is in Viewing or Suggesting mode. In the top right corner near the Share button, click the pencil/eye icon and switch back to Editing mode.

Issue 2: The Live Counter Is Lagging or Typing Feels Sluggish

On manuscripts exceeding 50,000 words, having "Display word count while typing" enabled causes Google Docs to re-tokenize thousands of paragraphs on every keystroke. To restore instant typing speed, click the floating pill, select Hide word count, and check your count periodically with Ctrl+Shift+C.

Issue 3: How to Count Words in a Shared Google Doc Anonymously

If you have a Google Doc URL set to "Anyone with the link can view", paste it into our tool at the top of this page. Word Word Count extracts the text and calculates the statistics directly in your browser without requiring you to log in, grant permissions, or install extensions.
